Nothing sets humanity apart from all other species more so than the act of creation simply for creations' sake. Language may have facilitated the cooperation necessary for civilization, yet Art predates even language. Tribal storytelling is the earliest component in the collective human consciousness, and is not narrative cave art humanity's oldest, most primal form of storytelling?
Our primitive ancestors' desire to express complex ideas through pictures and symbols increased their capabilities for developing civilization and technology, but it did not stop there. Creating and perfecting their art expanded the consciousness of the ancients'. More than a means to an end, the creative process became an end unto itself, and the pursuit of creative ideals was considered the highest form of intellectual endeavor and the standard by which human societies were esteemed.
Our greatest minds have always been the most creative and versatile. This is no coincidence. The interconnectedness of drawing, painting and sculpture to mathematics, architecture and science was well understood by the ancients, and it fanned the flames of their profound curiosity. Indeed, it has been said that Mankind is never closer to understanding the Creator, than in the act of creation itself. From the time the developing, reasoning minds of our ancestors first chose to follow a creative impulse, it was, and is, an act of free will in which we transcend mere instinct and aspire to the Divine.
As children, we are born creative. There is an inherent need to observe with our senses, interpret with our thoughts and emotions, and express ourselves with physical forms to produce created works. This characteristic defines us, perhaps more so than any other. Yet all too often, as we grow older, this precious attribute is prioritized less in our lives, even discouraged in many schools and work environments. Play and free-time are replaced by structure and rigid time schedules, and imagination and experimentation by risk-management and rote task lists. We're oppressed by logic and starved for magic.
And that is why, fellow Artists, we are going to get Unhinged! This is the reason we organized our group and why we hold our events: to reconnect ourselves with the fundamental and powerful creative energy that lies at the core of our humanity and individuality. Because when we all sit down to create, something very special and magical happens. The clock-watching predictability of daily life is replaced by the stream-of-consciousness spontaneity that is fueled by the creative process. The burdens of drudgery are replaced by the joy of play. As we remember how to lose ourselves in the fun world of imagination and creativity, we are no longer lost in the oppressive world of duty and obligation. It is a freeing learning experience ... renewing for the mind, liberating for the body, and restoring for the soul.
